About Seibukan Jujutsu®

Seibukan Jujutsu is an effective and practical martial art developed for self- protection as well as personal development.  Based on ancient tradition, Seibukan Jujutsu has been developed to meet the needs of the modern day warrior.  Its Japanese roots, philosophies, and the Seikendo healing art, make it unique among other systems.  The name, Seibukan Jujutsu, describes the art.  Seibukan means (Sei= correct, Bu= martial, Kan= house) the house of correct martial arts.  Jujutsu means (Ju= flexible, Jutsu= art) flexible art.

The physical and self-defense aspect of Seibukan Jujutsu emphasize defense against armed and unarmed, single and multiple assailants.  Gun, knife, club, rope, sword, long and short sticks are some of the weapons used in Seibukan Jujutsu to learn disarming techniques. In unarmed techniques called Taijutsu (body art), practitioners learn escaping techniques, throws, chokes, grappling, joint locking, counter techniques, and ground  defense. Seibukan Jujutsu makes its techniques effective and practical by using pressure points, kicks and strikes to the body as distractions, or to properly control and subdue an attacker. As a result the practitioners are conscious of avoiding unnecessary injuries.

Seibukan Jujutsu consists of twelve levels of study.  The first five are the Kyu levels.  These levels are preparation to become a black belt.  During this time students find their own pace of learning, and setting and achieving goals through the practice of “Awareness, Assessment, Action®.”  The last seven are the Dan levels.  These are the black belt levels.  In a progressive way, each level has a theme, self-defense techniques, and self-development concepts to study and put in practice. Each black belt level consist of it own unique Kata (prearranged techniques with or without a partner), principles, and many unarmed and disarming applications.

There are also seven themes throughout the black-belt level training: the four elements of Fire (Shodan), Water (Nidan), Earth (Sandan) and Wind (Yondan) culminating in the Void (Godan), and moving on to Consciousness (Rokudan) and finally Balance (Nanadan).

The three fundamental principles in Seibukan Jujutsu are Awareness, Assessment and Action. When taking appropriate action, there is a process to follow: No Challenge, No Resistance, No Injury, and whenever it is necessary to apply physical techniques, the elements to make this action effective are Distraction, Angles and Leverage.

Seibukan Jujutsu offers students opportunities to develop physical skills for effective self-defense, thereby increasing overall physical fitness, self-discipline, awareness and self-confidence.  This system’s unique structure allows students to learn and progress at their own pace. In the environment of feeling no limitations, the art maximizes practitioners’ ability to absorb the knowledge and physical skills that are necessary to achieve their goals.  With consistency, perseverance and commitment to daily practice, students can experience the unification of body, mind and spirit. This system evolves to meet the constant changing needs of society.

The philosophy of Seibukan Jujutsu becomes a part of each practitioner step by step.  As they make the decision to move on to the next level, they feel and recognize the changes taking place in them.   Change means to take action now, not to talk about it, not to give up after an enthusiastic start, not to hold back in fear; rather to keep going and attain one’s goals.

On June 1st, 1993, Julio Toribio Kancho officially announced the founding of Seibukan Jujutsu.  He has combined his skills, knowledge and experience to create Seibukan Jujutsu, a martial art discipline and path adapted to modern times.  Since its founding, Seibukan Jujutsu has been practiced by and today serves many adults, law enforcement officers, children, teenagers and disabled individuals for their self-protection and personal growth. The Art has been evolving and expanding around the Globe for over 30 years, with new students enrolling and prior generations carrying the torch forward.

“By bringing awareness and freedom of individual expression through the path of Seibukan Jujutsu, each person has the opportunity to reach their highest potential and achieve self-mastery.”
